To be clear, GParted is NOT a cloning tool. still not quite sure, not ever having done this before, if the best way to go with the actual cloning is using FoxClone (as AndyMH mentioned), or if GParted (as pbear mentioned) might be somewhat easier. seems that a certain amount of faith is required to do all of this, and to be confident that it will all work seamlessly (hopefully). then at that point, one would need to figure out a way to insure that going forward one will be always booting from that clone drive (setting it as so in the BIOS perhaps ?) before Re-inserting the original source drive back into the laptop to then erase that source drive or to re-partition it. once removed & successfully booting from the clone, one can then check the cloned drive to make sure all data was cloned properly (and thereby keeping the original source drive intact until all has been determined to be ok with the cloned drive). I am thinking that as you stated, probably the most logical step would be (before attempting to boot) to simply remove the source drive from the laptop after making the clone, then. of course this raises the issue as to how to go about properly booting from the cloned drive whilst the original source drive is still connected within the laptop. then at that point one could then decide if they want to erase/re-partition the original source drive. my personal thought is that one wouldn't want to immediately compromise the original source drive until one had the cloned drive actually booting, and working perfectly, and the cloned drive has been checked and indeed contains all the data from the source drive. yes, i agree with you (and AndyMH) as the dilemma becomes about how one goes about creating an exact "boot-able" clone without possibly creating an issue as to how to swap-out (or erase / re-partition) the source drive. but in reading thru the thread and all posts repeatedly, i was less focused on his mostly useless posts and rather much more focused on all of those who were offering some truly useful, interesting & helpful solutions. yes, frankly i was taken aback by that OP and his rude responses to those that were trying to truly help him out. Thanks for re-iterating that very good advice & info Reddog1, much appreciated.
